How To Use Hummer EV CrabWalk

If you’ve ever been in a parallel parking situation and just couldn’t seem to stick to the landing, you’ll appreciate CrabWalk. This innovative GMC feature is available on the HUMMER EV models and allows drivers to adjust the angle of all four wheels. Instead of making multiple back-and-forth adjustments to maneuver into a parking spot or navigate a tight space, CrabWalk enables a single, smooth operation.

Most vehicles have front-wheel steering, meaning only the front wheels turn, and the rear wheels follow the path they set. CrabWalk is a 4-Wheel Steering system in which both the front and rear wheels turn. The front wheels have the normal full range of motion, while the rear wheels match their angle by seven to 10 degrees. This allows the vehicle to move at a diagonal angle similar to – though not exactly like – a crab that walks sideways.

If you’re ever in a situation that requires you to move your vehicle at a difficult angle, you can follow the steps below to engage and disengage CrabWalk.

1. First, turn off Super Cruise and slow down to crawl speed, which is about 1.2 miles per hour.
2. Press and hold the 4-Wheel Steering button on the Driver Mode Control Dial until "CrabWalk Ready" appears on the infotainment screen.
3. Once CrabWalk engages, an animation will be displayed on the infotainment screen.

Now that your vehicle is in CrabWalk mode, the HD Surround Vision system will activate, showing you a 360-degree view of your surroundings. While in CrabWalk mode, you can travel at speeds up to 20 miles per hour. If your speed exceeds 25 miles per hour for more than 10 seconds, CrabWalk will automatically disengage. Press the 4-Wheel Steering button again to turn CrabWalk off and return to Automatic 4-Wheel Steering mode.
